Introduction
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” John 1:1-4
Through these few simple words, all the mysteries of the universe are revealed. These words say that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and somehow God himself. He made the universe, the universe was made through him. All life comes from him, and to find life, one must find him; to have true life, one must have HIM. Without him, there is no life.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe in him stands condemned already…” John 3:16-18
The world and those in it are already condemned, but Jesus saves. It is not through our own good deeds that we find salvation, but only through the sacrifice that Jesus gave. And was. He died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins, for whoever would accept his sacrifice as being for them. His blood washes us clean.
God came in the flesh and died for us. He was born Jesus of Nazareth, a little baby who grew to be a carpenter and who then left that behind and preached and healed for three years. All it took was three years for one man in a tiny country 2,000 years ago to change the entire world. Can you even imagine a world without Jesus in it?
Without Jesus, there would be no Christian church. Without Jesus and his church, there would be no universities (all the great universities of the West started as schools of Christian theology), no hospitals (caring for the sick in hospitals comes out of Christian love for those in physical distress), no equality for women (which rose in the Christianized West, which always looked to the Bible for examples of equality like Mary, Mary Magdalene, Martha, Deborah, Esther, Ruth, etc.), no abolition of slavery (Abraham Lincoln was a Christian who could no longer stand the mistreatment of his fellow man), no America (started by Puritans who had determined to worship their Lord as faithfully as they could)—all this because of one ex-carpenter who spoke to the crowds for three years.
His teachings shook the society of the day. “Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you” still astounds people to this day, and people still find it hard to put into practice. But beyond that, he healed those afflicted and performed other miracles. Are his miracles the reason why his teachings took root so strongly and spread so fast? But he did more than merely speak and heal.
Jesus Christ died and rose again.
In accordance with prophecies hundreds and thousands of years old, he died on the cross and rose again to life three days later, never to die again. He was seen alive again by hundreds of people, and they watched him rise into the air and leave this world (with a promise to return again). And it is these witnesses who spread the word of his Gospel to the four corners of the earth. Many of them died horrible deaths, but they did not reject the Gospel. They would sooner be put to death than deny the truth of what they had seen.
And they knew they were going to a better place, for they trusted him who told them.
Do you know where you are going when you die? You can.
If you ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life and to save you from your sins, he will. He already has, on the cross 2,000 years ago. It’s a present already bought and paid for, with his eternal blood. All you have to do is receive it. All you have to do is claim it. And you can claim it by praying something like this:
“Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I’m sorry. I repent of my sins and want to follow you. Lord God, please save me, free me, heal me. All this, I ask and thank and praise you for, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
